From November this year, ASIC is removing any old trading name registrations on the Australian Business Register (ABR). The ABR is where people can search and confirm for details of a business’ ABN registrations. These changes are the last step in cleaning up these registrations and ensuring all business names are recorded on ASIC’s federal register.
Trading names were established under old state based systems that operated before ASIC was brought in charge of running a federal business name registration. Many businesses may still be operating and running their business under the old trading name registration. So to ensure these businesses can continue to operate and use these names, they will need to register and pay for use of the business name with ASIC.
